The Project
The building of the Gordie Howe International Bridge represents a 25-year planning and construction process to provide travel and commerce between the United States and Canada. While the high-profile bridge facilitates traffic, the international commerce is supported by the Port of Entry buildings, inspection facilities and control booths. To meet the standards of two countries for safety, design and application, the expansion joints chosen were Seismic Pre-Compressed Vertical Foam Systems (FES2) with two-hour fire ratings. The silicone bellow system is designed with a UL-tested fire-retardant foam that's also watertight. More than 2,500 feet of the FES2 system was installed and provided the installers maximum flexibility as it can be installed in interior and exterior vertical applications and offers sound attenuation.
